Canadian passport ranks among the top 10 most powerful in the world for 2020
The Canadian passport has managed to retain a top ten spot in a ranking of the world's most powerful passports for 2020.
Provided every year by the Henley Passport Index, the ranking considers the "power" of each passport based on how many destinations the holder can visit without the need for a visa. This year, the #1 spot has been claimed by the Japanese passport, which allows visa-free access to 191 countries. This is its third consecutive year at the top.
Following closely behind is the Singaporean passport in second place (190 countries), then the South Korean and German passports in a third-place tie (189 countries).
Passports from Canada, the US, and the UK have all dropped in rank from 2019, but they all still remain in the top 10. The American and British passports share seventh place (185 countries), while the Canadian passport is now in ninth place along with the Australian passport (183 countries).
Possession of any the passports in the top 10 is still desirable as many places, including Italy, Mexico, and Greece, plan to reopen their borders in the coming weeks. With international travel resuming in such places, Canadian travelers may be able to whip out their passports sooner than they think.
